All About Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach was first inhabited by the Waccamaw Indians. They fished around all the rivers of the long bay. After the American Revolution, several families received land grants and settled in. For the most part though, Horry county was sparse with people. The Wither's family had settled here, and in 1822 a hurricane threw their entire house into the ocean killing all 18 people inside. The town became barren with people again. Then after the civil war, it became a weekend getaway for employees of the Conway lumber company, now known as Burroughs and Chapin. Mr. Burroughs suggested the name, after the wax myrtle plant that grew abundantly in the area.
